Chapter 13
Maybe in wishing that Sarah would go to the media, Dan had spoken too soon. At the time, it had seemed like she could do no damage â which he and Jeremy could stand up to any kind of smear she attempted to make on them. The gay rights movement in this country was snowballing, after all; equal marriage had finally been voted in, and it continued to make leaps and bounds forward. It felt like the media would be on their side, rather than hers.
Unfortunately, Dan had sorely underestimated the way his ex could re-frame things against him.
It was a few weeks later on a cool spring morning that they woke up to the mayhem. Predictably enough, it was Dan's phone that started making noise first. Texts, tweets, calls and all manner of other alerts started vibrating and flashing his phone on the nightstand so hard that he could no longer sleep through it. Jeremy grunted as he felt Dan move, and Dan felt a little mean for disturbing him â but then he saw the preview of one of his messages on the screen, and a few seconds later Jeremy's phone started blowing up too.
âShit,â he said, nudging Jeremy with his elbow, and rubbing the sleep out of his eyes with his spare hand. âWake up. Baby; get up.â
âWhat? What is it?â
âWe fucked up. That's what. We pissed her off.â
Dan's eyes could barely move fast enough for the amount of alerts that were coming through, but he didn't have to read each one individually in order to understand. He could see shocking headlines, incriminating allegations, and one repeated picture, over and over again â Sarah feigning tears in a TV studio.
She had done an interview about him and Jeremy.
Hockey Pregnancy Hell: My Cheating Gay Husband.
âCalm down,â Jeremy told him, still waking up, and reached for his phone. âWho did we piss off? What's the matter?â
âSarah,â he clarified, realizing he hadn't exactly been specific. âShe's gone to the media like we guessed, but⦠she's claiming to be pregnant. Claiming I just disappeared on her. I mean⦠she's crying in this interview, on camera.â
â...Shit.â
There could be no overstating how bad this was for Dan and his career. It was all bullshit, of course. Dan was pretty sure Sarah wasn't pregnant. He'd be lying if he said he paid enough attention to her when they were married, but he had at least noticed some things â like the fact that she had asked him to pick up some tampons for her only a week before their argument, and the fact they hadn't fucked in months. She couldn't possibly be pregnant.
Could she?
Unlessâ¦
âIt's his baby, isn't it?â said Jeremy, voicing the thought that Dan had just had. âShe's fallen pregnant with Devon, and now she's going to use that kid too⦠well. Do this.â
âShe'll be after money, too,â Dan pointed out. âShe'll use this for leverage through the divorce. She was already going to bleed me dry, and now this, and⦠fuck!â
Jeremy rubbed his shoulder absently, still scrolling through his own notifications.
